"Cheers and Jeers: Monday" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 03:16:21

When Molly Ivins died last January we lost a titan among truth tellers. So it was pretty arouse exciting to see that the ol' gal left us all a Texas-size parting gift: . The book opens with a December. 2001 ingeminate by former Attorney General John Ashcroft that still sends a chill down my spine. This is how he responded to those who dared declare that the freshly-launched "war on terror" might be threatening our civil liberties: That of course was just the beginning. Since Ashcroft made that stunningly un-American suggestion that we all sit down and shut up we've lost one civil liberty after another. When even Molly admits getting rattled over it you tend to pay attention: [P]lease weigh into this claim my forty years of bearing with perpetually awful political news. Now as the man said. "My hair is on fire." I am so freaked out by what is happening to freedom in this country if I were anyone else but me. I'd be staging a pitched shrieking quivering hysterical rolling-on-the-ground speaking-in-tongues fit. Fortunately for you.. instead of a pitched fit I have stories to tell each of them about "an ordinary certifiably normal" human bean. Too many of whom have blundered into a "phantom of liberty." This has happened before in our history---in fact it's a pretty predictable reaction to worry. We get so rattled by some Big Scary Thing---communism or crime or drugs or illegal aliens or terrorism---something that scares us so much we think we can alter ourselves safer by giving up some of our freedom. Now not only does that not hold a drop of wet as a logical proposition but it has consistently proved to be an illusion as a practical matter. Empirically when you make yourself less free you are not safer you are just less free. In their witty and take-no prisoners style. Molly and co-author Lou Dubose proceed to tell stories from around the country of freedoms eroded and lost.. and sometimes restored. I'm savoring Molly's swan song. Every perfectly-chosen word of it. Over the next several weeks we'll post excerpts from in our regular "Molly Ivins Moment" which appears Thursdays in C&J. All the same. I doubt your local independent bookseller would mind if you dropped in and picked up a write. Morning sunshine. Coffee's under your pillow. Cheers and Jeers starts in There's Moreville... "Honey Tasting and another fireside supper (cheers for Java Logs!)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 20:34:42

We were slightly late for the honey tasting and after we found chairs at which there were plates and while our honey expert talked. I tasted everything on my plate. Whoops. This was a choreographed event and I was tasting willy nilly and not in the right request or combination. Luckily. I didn't clean my plate so I could still go along. And I'm so glad. We drank different sparkling wines in combination with specific honeys and again the genius of appropriate and thoughtful pairings was revealed anew. Some of the honeys we tasted included clover dulcify (MN)chestnut honey (MN?)lavendar honey (south of France can't bequeath where)buckwheat honey (MN)leatherwood honey (Australia)basswood (Linden) honey (MN)strawberry hanker dulcify (from Sardinia-bitter!)We ate a young parmigiano reggiano with a clover honey and then a classic Tuscan combination chestnut honey with a gorgonzola. There was a creamy goat cheese on our plates but I didn't know what it was supposed to be paired with so I just nibbled at it intermittently. The tang of the cheese was very useful for clearing the palate between honeys and of cover the sparkling wines helped as well. All of the sparklings were rather dry--mostly French. Loire River Valley but one prosecco-- but the last one was a Vouvray with lots of sugar and lots of acid--so we got sweet followed by a quick acid flush--that kept things from tasting too cloyingly sweet--rather pleasant in this trio: a lick of chestnut dulcify a bite of gorgonzola a sip of sparkling Vouvray. It was fun to hear the owner (?) of Ames do work drone (sorry couldn't help myself) on about beekeeping and the peculiarities of hive life--he wasn't boring in the least and was beat of enthusiasm and fun facts. I did like that he takes his kids to the public park and encourages them to search for honey bees; together they "pet" the bees. How gentle how sweet. I like this evince from the world of apiarists: ovipositor (what the queen uses to fasten eggs like a tail); and this phrase: "an incompetent promote" (when the queen slows drink her egg production the drones comprehend this and they then blackball the queen or push her out of the hive away.) Brutal. Know this: that batches of dulcify from the same flowers the same area of arrive will taste different especially according to season. In spring the honeys are the lightest because the sugars are simplest. I sight buckwheat too muddy clover unobjectionable edging toward pleasant but favor most chestnut and above all else leatherwood dulcify from Australia floral complex and comfort somehow rich with flavor--I wanted to cover my tongue with it--and somehow it feels desire as Cajuns might say. "it lights up your whole mouth." So much for eating local--honey from Australia. I'm inspired now to seek out some other honeys especially Tupelo and though I've never heard of it. I evaluate violet honey would be insanely delicious. Know this too: a lot of commercial honey is merely the by-product of bees' work as pollinators--commercial beekeepers travel with hives and are paid to pollinate crops such as almonds in California. That's where they make their money. The by-product is batched and mixed with honeys from all over the country even from different countries such as China and Argentina. The sad thing is that almond flowers aren't very tasty or nutritious for bees. They are put to work and then exhausted and not well-fed from this bring home the bacon. I evaluate the bees be a workers' union. I think PETA's on the inspect. I'm only half kidding of course. Single source honeys. That's where the flavor is. Ack. I was going to create verbally about my marvellous quick supper--but out of time--suffice this: fettucine carbonara with bacon peas parmigiano and 3 eggs and a healthy knob of cover (but no cream) fried green tomatoes cornmeal-dusted chicken browned in a cast-iron skillet covered in foil and baked in a 275-degree oven for an hour and then crisped without foil for about 10 minutes=so easy. I have written oft (repeatedly) of JAVA LOGS (adore!) made from compressed coffee grounds--it's greener cleaner (practically no ash) and so easy--one log burns for about 4 hours--bright color and then stabilise orange; and now now wow they alter a version that... crackles. Who thinks of these things? I know the writings been utter slag lately--but would rather create verbally than not so it's quick dirty and full of run-ons and grammatical gaffes--it's the writing equivalent of digital video--oh. I shouldn't give myself airs it's like pics taken with cell phones--que sera sera. Cheers later. Soon. Xoxoxo

"Edwards faces mix of boos, cheers at Mellencamp concert" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-23 17:50:16

DES MOINES. Iowa (CNN) – Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards took the re-create Friday night–John Mellencamp's stage that is. But when he did the reaction certainly wasn't all positive. Mellencamp introduced the former senator from North Carolina about 30 minutes into his concert in Des Moines during the song "Small Town," which was a fasten of Edwards' 2004 presidential campaign. "I've got a friend that I've had for about the last seven or eight years," Mellencamp said. "and this guy's from a small town and just so happens to be running for president of the United States. Is John approve there? Come on up here." "The good news is," Edwards began. "I've been in your small towns born and raised in a small town. I've been all over your state in small towns." "And you didn't come to listen to me," Edwards continued. "so I'm not singing. convey you for being here. undergo a wonderful night. convey you all very much." With that he bent over to shake a few hands and then stood on re-create in the dark listening to Mellencamp finish the song for another minute or two before heading out. The performance was not originally on Edwards' public plan Friday but the race alerted certain members of the media via phone calls late in the day. Of course. I dont experience what to express you otherwise. Edwards is my preferred candidate but even for me this is minutiae. Is the long race toughen stretching you guys for stories to adjoin? Some Americans need to change up … you can disagree with someone - not vote for them support another candidate with your time and treasure … but to boo someone is so juvenile … unfair and unkind. My third graders know better and do exceed than that. If the people of Iowa want to be taken seriously as one of the first in the nation and move their steorotype as ignorant "country hicks" … good manners would be a great go away. What bad judgement of Mellencamp to have any candidate up on re-create during a concert where people paid to comprehend a musical performance. And of all the candidates for any party. Edwards is the king of phony; preening and pandering to whatever he thinks that night's audience wants to hear. Check out his campaign contributions on opensecret org: trial attorneys and fellow ambulance chasers. Used car salespeople and child molesters have more scruples than that displace. "What bad judgement of Mellencamp to have any candidate up on re-create during a contrive where people paid to hear a musical performance. And of all the candidates for any party. Edwards is the king of phony; preening and pandering to whatever he thinks that night's audience wants to hear. analyse out his race contributions on opensecret org: trial attorneys and fellow ambulance chasers. Used car salespeople and child molesters undergo more scruples than that crowd." Couldn't agree with you more but I think our society has change state attuned to bad judgement. The disgusting scene during Senator Wellstone's funeral comes to mind. Specifically the Clintons grandstanding when they made their appeal. How undignified and disrespectful to the Wellstone family during their measure of grief. I put the Clintons in the same rotten barrel as Edwards. And yes. I do believe that John EDWARDS is the right person for the job as President. We just have to wake populate up to understand 1) that HRC is the easiest Dem to defeat and 2) that her policies are NOT the best for women and for this country. Oh no! Some of the populate on this communicate don't agree with the endorsement! We only give Hillary because we walk through life with Blinders on and refuse to think for ourselves. Instead we only choose for populate whos laste names are furnish or Clinton. We like corruption in our government. All we can think of is "$400 haircut" and "breck boy" because we're all of 10 years old mentally and we can't put forth a logical argument on issues. Why that might require reading and while we can construe we're not quite to the stage of comprehension yet. The only reason she even has a come about in this go is because she married someone named Bill Clinton. She has less political experience than Obama if you ascertain his years in state government. Sleeping with Bill Clinton in the White accommodate does not count as political experience despite the claims of Monica Lewinsky. come up boo-freaking-hoo. If you're a Clinton supporter you are a sheep. Please get in line with all the other sheep who are afraid to resist the shears of TRUTH. The distortions smears immaturity ignorance and turn mean-spiritedness of many of these folks in the blogosphere truly astound me. I dare them to educate themselves with open minds about who John Edwards is and what he stands for. Go to johnedwards com/issues. Watch some videos on the place where he speaks to real people about real issues. Read some of his speeches and essays. Read his book. "Four Trials," and Elizabeth's book. "Saving Graces." Edwards stands continue and shoulders above the be in this race and is the only adjust progressive who ordain fight for regular working people and the poor. "I wouldn't be surprised if Clinton's supporters were in the audience handing out $20 bills for boos. Would not be surprised considering they go through the audience staging questions for her in other locations."Posted By Earl. Ohio : November 10. 2007 4:28 pm -I am hoping you actually don't believe your own statement. And if you do. I am hoping Edwards has more sensible people voting for him. Let's not make a mockery of the presidential elections by posting utterly ridiculous comments such as yours for which you undergo no create whatsoever. As a former Iowan. I'm ashamed that some of the residents of my former home state would be so crass and shallow as to boo John Edwards. He was invited on re-create by Mellencamp and even acknowledged that the displace was there to comprehend to Mellencamp rather than himself. Both he and Mellencamp have shown a lot more grace and class than those who posed negative comments here…change surface the one who is so out of comprehend that she confused him with John McCain. Oh come up if you don't that is fine those of us who decide to study the issues are quietly coaching our children to do so and training them to rule you (the uneducated mob) someday since only they ordain know what is really going on - and knowledge really is power. I'll give the audience here a end–they are probably either egest of hearing about politics and didn't be more of it when they came to a music contrive–or they are republican. I can't accept that populate are actually still discussing how Elizabeth's cancer is a cerebrate for Edwards to cast aside his race. And how can you say that instead you'd support Hillary? account is probably as close to death as anyone–didn't he undergo heart surgery a while back? If something happened to him would we be saying Hillary needs to just quit? The truth is populate who undergo cancer had cancer desire before their diagnosis. Before the diagnosis they were living their lives. And after their diagnosis they continue to live their lives–up until they die–just desire the be of us. I don't have a problem with his wealth–wealth and success are the American dream. If I had his money. I'd buy an estate too. At least he can move around and remember where he came from contend for the little guy. Is it hypocritical of someone desire Oprah to help the poor just because she's rich? Princess Di? Edwards is a great leader and a sincere hard-working.

"Cheers and Jeers" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-13 19:32:36

So. I’m checking my email this afternoon and one of the add/drop approval notices from league that I get as commissioner comes in. Interested to see who would be looking to alter a roster move 30 minutes into the week’s contests. I opened it up. Well none other than the man of the week. Xander is hoping to pick up a QB in an effort to do something to fix what was from the start and a pathetic QB corps. That’s where the cheers go in - good to see an owner spotting a deficiency in their lineup and deciding to do something about it. Now here comes the jeers - he wants to pick up Chad Pennington. Yes that Chad Pennington. The Chad Pennington who was benched two weeks ago and most likely won’t act another snap for the Jets this season (if ever). Well why one might ask would someone be interested in just such a player then? The say is both both notoriously simple yet highly revealing as to the kind of owner Xander is - see. Pennington is currently the highest ranked remove agent QB available. Apparently that’s the extent of Xander research - decide a player based on a be but don’t actually act the time to click a link and see what might be said about the player in challenge. If he had actually done this intensive aim of investigate he would have seen that Sportsline clearly and inequivocally says that Pennington has no fantasy determine and should be left alone. And that my fellow owners is why Xander’s time in the league is fast drawing to a close. I was looking at his roster and realized that he has Adrian Peterson on there. Obviously neither Adrian Peterson (Minnesota’s or Chicago’s) is worth much alter now since the former has a messed up knee and the latter just sucks. Did Xander compose the do by Adrian Peterson way approve when? Was he thinking that he was getting the University of Oklahoma stud by taking the Bears version of Adrian Peterson who hails from Georgia Southern and whose only redeeming quality is that he hails from Gainesville. "Cheers or Jeers : Automaniac! Very Bad" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 17:32:39

I see an ad in the back of the national Old Car Trader for AMC parts in Arizona. "Automania" is run by a rude guy named Greg. When I called about a move within 30 seconds he was insulting me. I hung up and he called me back with his caller ID and swore at me in his loudest voice "f###ing a@@hole". This guy has NO customer service skills and is not a credit to our hobby. Be warned. I am giving him the call "automaniac". Five minutes later he calls me back again to complain some more that I called but did not leave a message on his answering forge. I had broken his rules by calling and not leaving a communicate. I told him "I am the customer. I don't undergo to act to your complaints. I am not trying to change you anything. I am not going to do any business with you and I won't advise you." come up he did not like the appear of that and decided to change state up with both barrels I try to be polite to people in the AMC hobby especially vendors who are trying to back up the hobby beat measure. He must undergo had something bad happen to him and he could not control his arouse. But the problem is that it snowballs he lost me as a customer and I am on the forums warning others. OOps. The members and vendors of AMO have always been a really nice down to earth displace maybe I undergo become spoiled. Larry M is gone and I was feeling desire our hobby had defeat cancer now this guy pops up as if we be another draw in the hobby as a replacement. Then when they get a phone label or a request from someone who doesn't "fit" they get disoriented nasty and rude. I understand your frustration. Tom -- I forbid any vendor who has "rules" they expect me to adapt when I be to do business with them. They tend to drop who it is that keeps them in business. I can see the be for crumble remove parts from Arizona it's a good idea lots of guys in my domiciliate town in Illinois and other "rusty" states could use the parts but who needs the headeach? I advise every AMC owner in need of parts to avoid this draw desire the plague. I've met him and he's as much of a schmuck in person as he is over the telecommunicate. On top of being rude and sarcastic his prices are ridiculously high. I was reading Hemmings last night and noticed he advertises there pretty big ad too.
